When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations.

The flow is top-notch and the production is excellent, but there is nothing world-changing here.Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. As a return to the game, The Blueprint 3 is a more than passable effort. The rest of the record ranges from mediocre to good, but doesn't make a significant splash. While the tone of the whole album lacks some zip, this track is a groaner… which will likely guarantee its popularity in clubs. "Young Forever," which regrettably samples the Alphaville track "Forever Young" (see what they did there?) is the one standout disappointment. It's a who's who of rap music, and although not the catchiest tune on the record, it's a nostalgic listen at the very least.

Cole, pays homage to all the other rappers that make hip-hop great. On the other side of the coin, the gracious and generous "A Star is Born," featuring J.

"What We Talkin' About," a braggadocios jam announcing Jay-Z's return, is a worthy addition to the canon of brag tracks. "Run This Town," produced by Kanye (who also guests), is the other already-released single, and one of the most vital tracks on the album. "Empire State of Mind" is a love letter to New York, Carter's home town. "Empire State of Mind," which features the soaring vocals of Alicia Keys, and "Run This Town," featuring Rihanna are the best collaborations of the bunch. It may be dated in its message, but the production on the track will stand the test of time. Backed by the funkiest, scrappiest beat on the record, "DOA" is a diss track that attacks an entire segment of the music industry, and does it in an acerbic but funny way. Aimed squarely at the T-Pains of the world, this already-certified hit is singular of purpose: to expose and annihilate the trend of auto-tune. One of them has already been released as such: "DOA (Death of Auto-Tune)".

This is commercial rap, but it's well-made, and many of the tracks have been tailor-made to be singles. Still, the production, mostly by Kanye West, but including tracks by Timbaland, No I.D. There are guests on 11 of the 15 tracks, and although some add a lot, the overall effect is that of a collaborative effort, and some of the impact is lessened as a result. One of the reasons for the emotional disconnect is that Blueprint 3 isn't entirely about Jay-Z. Here, the songs are more superficial, and that's a little disappointing.

The best Jay-Z is accessible, raw and full of emotion. Eleven albums in, Jay-Z is an international superstar, and among the most well-known musicians on the planet, so no one expects him to still be rapping about "coming up" and "making it." But parts of Blueprint 3 feel insulated and impersonal, two words that could never be associated with Reasonable Doubt, Vol. While much of it sounds like vintage Hov, the intensity of the early days is notably absent. Jay-Z didn't rise to the top of the hip-hop world by being meek and mellow he is a force to be reckoned with on the mic, and even handier on the marketing side of the business.Īlthough The Blueprint 3 is musically a return to form (after Kingdom Come and American Gangster didn't quite live up to Jay-Z's considerable legacy), it suffers from a lack of punch. In many ways, it is a reminder of all the things that make Jay-Z albums great: great flow, slick production, and creative self-aggrandizement. In the rap game, it doesn't get any bigger than Jay-Z, and he has unretired (Why not? Everyone is doing it…) to unleash his latest record, The Blueprint 3.
